After teaching Classical history at Oxford for a decade, a restless Robert Lambert is approached in the late-1930s by a mysterious figure ‘loosely attached to the Foreign Office’. Lambert accepts a mission to Italy to gauge ground-level opinion in the country under the cover of a sabbatical to broaden his knowledge of archaeology.
There he meets Miriam Asher, a professional archaeologist; but Miriam is Jewish and as war approaches and Roger returns to England, Mussolini’s racial laws come into force and she and her family are threatened.
Roger enlists in the SOE and is sent to Italy as a liaison officer with the Partisans operating behind German lines. There, after a gap of four years, he is re-united with Miriam and their shared danger in the battle against fascist militias brings them ever closer.
